Christopher Columbus’ decision to return to Ocho Rios more than once is shared by modern day travelers. Impressed with the area’s beauty, the discoverer noted, “This is the fairest land mine eyes have ever seen.”
No matter how many times today’s travelers may visit the area they always long to return. These modern-day, repeat, savvy visitors know Ocho Rios and its garden parish of St. Ann as a fair land indeed. Many things grow, so much so that Adam and Eve would have felt right at home. Waterfalls and rivers flow. Grassy hills roll gently down to white sandy coves. Turquoise-blue waters lap at a craggy coastline.
Noted as Jamaica’s fun playground and “attractions capital,” Ocho Rios lies midway along the island’s north coast, almost halfway between Montego Bay and Port Antonio. An upgraded highway now extends nearly the entire stretch from the airport in Montego Bay to Ocho Rios. Visitors can complete the drive in less than 1 ½ hours.
Much activity whirls around the downtown Ocho Rios area, wrapping around Mallards Bay, a half-moon shaped harbor.
