Shopping in Jamaica arouses passion for every temptation. If it glitters, smells good or looks terrific, you’ll find it in one of the many shops on island. And visitors won’t have to look far. Jamaica’s duty-free shopping is as inviting as the Caribbean sun. It’s no longer the best-kept secret among savvy travelers. Duty-free shopping has been discovered.
Visitors return year after year to enjoy the savings, which in turn, help pay for their vacation. Just as importantly, bargain hunters have developed trusting relationships with merchants, some of these friendships last for years, generation to generation. Jewelry, diamonds, perfume, watches, crystal, coffee, leather goods and liquor lead the list of popular items that most new and repeat visitors to Jamaica take home.
Duty-free shopping has become big business in Jamaica, and it’s easy to see why. When one considers the duty-free and tax-free initiatives, the savings on merchandise is sizable. Those savings can be as much as 40 to 50 per cent less than a similar purchase in the U.S. Add these savings to the variety and quality found throughout the island and the growth and popularity is clear as a diamond. And there’s no slowing down the growth, now with the advent of the Shoppes at Rose Hall, a luxury duty-free shopping center in the Montego Bay area and the addition of stores elsewhere.
Consider for a moment the amount of merchandise offered. Visitors can literally shop ’til they drop (preferably on the nearest beach) with the variety of choices. Shoppers can choose from more products in one location than they may see in a lifetime. With showcase after showcase of designer jewelry and watches, soothing perfumes and fine crystal, it may be beyond imagination, so where do you start? Begin here with this publication. Shoppers will find accurate information, names of reliable merchants and pages of enticing advertisements. Visit the plazas and browse. Stick to a plan and don’t be misdirected by taxi or bus drivers.
And foremost to remember, shopping is for all to enjoy. “One of the wonderful things about Jamaica is couples can relax. Everyone feels like a newlywed,” says Kumar Samtani, president of the Duty Free Association of Jamaica. “They have time together that they don’t have at home - time to choose gifts for each other and to make memories.”
