History of South Coast

The Arawak Indians (Jamaica’s first settlers) once lived along the South Coast shores before their civilization was shattered. Early Spanish settlers came searching for gold; today’s visitors arrive seeking serenity, solitude, and other treasures.

Once a bustling port in the 19th century, Black River was one of the country’s grandest and modern towns, shipping logwood as the chief export. It was also the first area to receive electricity in Jamaica.

Tradition still reigns today in Mandeville where lingering British influences are evident in the architecture of the parish church, courthouse, and elsewhere. The parish gets its name from the Duke of Manchester, governor of Jamaica. The capital, Mandeville, was named after the Duke’s son. Destination Jamaica
